March 3rd 2005 took me to Shanghai. One of the most modern cities in the world - but after my meetings I got the driver to drop me in the old part of town and I got some pictures here - it was almost like Dickensian London in parts - the smells were incredible - and the food wasn't bad. All this will be gone very soon so it was maybe my last chance to photograph it.
What the locals must have thought about this western guy dressed in a business suit taking photos of their houses is annyone's guess.
I returned to Shanghai in Spetember 2006 to capture the modern parts of town. The Hutongs I'd seen in 2005 were gone. |
